Birds Nest

Today Nicola shared her find of a small birds nest that was found in a tree on her property.
We noticed that the bird had woven its nest around twigs so that it could not fall out of the tree.  It was made out of moss, grasses and some white fluff that the bird had collected.

Silkworm Moth

Nicola brought a dyed silkworm cocoon to school.
We carefully cut it open and revealed a dead silkworm.  The silk threads were very fine but tough to cut through.

Fossils at School!

If you look very carefully at these sedimentary rock you will see some fossils.  We had many questions about how they came to be in this rock.
We found out -
  • fossils are found in sedimentary rocks
  • they can be millions of years old
  • eggs, seeds, bones, plants, animals and even nests can be found as fossils
  • that these fossils tell us about life on our planet millions of years ago.

Welcome to the beginning of the New School Year

Kia Ora Koutou to all the whanau and students of Room 11.  We are very grateful to Tesha and her family who brought in a Stick Insect that was found on her uncles leg.
The class had some questions about them such as - Can they smell?  What do they eat?
We looked up some information and found out these facts:-
  • they peel off their skin and eat it
  • they play dead when a bird is near
  • they throw out their eggs and they look like seeds
  • if a leg or arm is eaten by a bird they can grow it back
  • some can change colours
  • they camouflage
  • some can fly
  • they eat rose, blackberry and oak tree leaves
  • they are not raised by their parents
