Our Pirate Stories

The Black Cannon

Black Beard stood on the bridge of his ship with his parrot, Jake, looking in the same direction. Black Beard’s black beard was being blown to the left. He was looking for his ancestors lost ship to find all their gold. Finally, he caught a glimpse of a sip. Had he finally found The Black Cannon? He looked up at its sail. “NO!!” he cried. The ship was not his ancestors, it was his enemy, Star Fish! He told Jake to tell all the other pirates to fire the cannons at Star Fish and to sink the ship. They started to fire, but Star Fish was firing too. The pirates who were encouraging the other pirates stopped at the sight of two cannon balls hitting each other. Star Fish’s passengers stopped to look at what it had done to the surface of the water. Black Beards crew just kept on firing. Finally, the crew of Black Beard had got a cannon straight through the front of Star Fish. People were getting life jackets and jumping overboard as the ship sank. As Black Beard watched a glimpse of black hit the corner of his eye. He turned his head around and saw a tiny bit of black on the top of the mountains. He thought it probably was not The Black Cannon because it was on the mountain, and ships are always on the water. The rest of the pirates were dancing and singing sea shantes on the deck, But Black Beard couldn’t stand it, so he shouted “Dinner Time!” All the pirates went below the decks and sat down still screaming about Star Fish sinking. Black Beard went to the kitchen to tell the cook he needed to make dinner. The cook went straight to work as Black Beard left him in peace. Black Beard sat down and just listened to what the pirates were yelling. It was hard, and he had a giant headache. He was about to burst. He hunched his shoulders and shouted “SHUT UP!!!!” as loud as he could. Everyone stopped and stared at Black Beard. “Dinner will soon be ready, and I want you all to shut up or I’ll cut your head off! The only one who will not have his head chopped off is me best friend, Jolly Rodger.” Everyone groaned. “Shut it!!!” yelled Jolly Rodger, Black Beards best mate. Just at that moment, the cook came running out with dinner. Everyone started stuffing their face until they could eat no longer. They all went to bed and as soon as they hit their pillow, they started snoring. Black Beard and Jake were left alone. Black Beard was twirling one of his hairs in his beard. He was thinking about the black he had seen on the mountain. It could be The Black Cannon, but it could also be a trap Star Fish had planned. He didn’t know but he was going to see what it was! The next day, the pirates climbed the mountain to find out what it was, it was The Black Cannon! They all climbed carefully on and searched. But Jolly Rodger took one and fell through the ship and died. The pirates saw what happened and dared not take another step. They didn’t know how to get across without falling, but Black Beard found the treasure chest and started running toward it. The first step he took, he fell and never returned. The other pirates were so sad they sacrificed themselves and jumped. They all fell and that was the end of Black Beard and his crew. Their ship stayed, and it may still be there today…

Captain Jack and the Pirate Party

Once upon a time there lived a crew of pirates. There was one captain. His name was Captain Jack. Captain Jack wished that one day him and his crew would be invited to a pirate party. It was getting dark so him and his crew called it a night.
In the morning, Captain Jack rose out of bed because he heard a bang on the side of the boat. He peaked over the side of the boat and it was a glass bottle with a note in side. He ran to his collection of fishing nets and grabbed his best one yet and fished for the bottle until he finally caught it. He dried the bottle and reached his hand into the jar and grabbed the note. He read the note out loud, “ Dear Captain Jack, you are Invited to my pirate party. I am turning 59! PLEASE COME!!!
Time: 7 o’clock – 7 in the morning!
Place: scull rock
Date: 29th October
Bring: junk food
From: Black Beard.
YAY! BOYS WERE GOING TO A PARTY! He screamed at the top of his lungs and spat a tooth out. Were going to a party
Oh yeah!!!!!!!! yes yes yes!! I always knew this day was coming. Lets celebrate.!!!!! They had refreshments and heaps of junk food. By t time they had finished their party it was 10 o’ clock. OH MY GOD WE MISSED THE PARTY.
They were so sad. Captain Jack said sadly at least we still had a party celibrating that we were invited to a party. They collapsed on the ground because they were demented. And they all live happily ever after.

I’m going to Sandy Islands

“Scrub the deck” screamed Captain Mean. “Squawk, squawk scrub the deck.” Screeched his bird. “Shhh you” demanded the Captain. “Um Captain “said Pete one of them from the crew, “See that glass bottle over there in the sea.” “If you see it then go and fetch it” roared Captain Mean with a stern look.
“I’m not a dog,” said Pete in his ridiculous voice.
“Well …I DON’T CARE!!!!!!!!” said Captain Mean. He was so angry flames just about flew out his ears his face turned red, “GO AWAY!” he ordered. “Now I know why they call you captain mean” mumbled Pete. “WHAT WAS THAT???” screeched captain mean.
“Nothing” replied Pete. “Just hurry up and do it,” said captain mean. “Here you go”. “wow it’s a map to sandy islands were I grew up , go away im having a happy moment for once, full steam ahead boys. Hours later…look that’s the rock I used to play on when I was little kid, look that’s my old house all though now I live in my boat who needs a house said captain mean and look there’s the x and x marks the spot! Dig, dig, and dig hours of digging later. “ Bring it up boys”. “Open it open it cheered Pete. Captain mean opened the treasure box, thousands of golden penny’s shone into his eyes. He sailed off in his boat by himself well no body was looking and spent all his money on useless things and never saw annoying Pete again but he could still hear his yelling and maybe just maybe if you listen carefully you may still hear him.

Captain Hook

Captain Hook stood very still on the edge of the bridge of the pirate ship. His beard blew in the strong wind well his gold tooth shined in the bright daylight.

His pirate skull marked hat swang in the wind. He has a sward in his good hand instead of his not good hand that has been cut of in a fight with army.

His yellow and red shirt waves in the very strong wind that makes leaves go very fast in the wind. He tried not to glance at the burning sun with his only eye.

Captain Jake

One morning Captain Jake stood on the bridge of his ship with his parrot Griff. They were looking for the Treasure Island because he had never found one before and he dreamed to find the Treasure Island as well. So he went looking for the Treasure Island and he found it but there were three different islands to choose from and he chooses but he hoped he went to the right island and he did so he went back home. Suddenly the bad pirates came along to get the treasure but captain Jake’s crew tried to get away from the bad pirates but it was too hard but they had to get away from the pirates because there were really really close so they turned and turned and just got away from it and went back home and opened the treasure. It was fill of lots and lots of GOLD! GOLD! GOLD! and that’s what he wanted.

Junior Production

Our World Our Taonga

On the 20th of November a legend came to us from St Clair Schools adorable Juniors.

It’s all about darkness turned into light but most important Our World Our Taonga.

My Favourite part is when Tane Mahuta split up their two parents,
Papatuanuku earth mother and Ranginui sky father and it were just to have a little bit of light.

Tawhuri Matea didn’t like having her parents split up so she made it rain with lightning and thunder.

It was a really fun performance and was entertaining and very powerful.

They all looked wonderful in costumes. By Jemma

Our world our Taonga

Tangaroa’s costume sparkling in the light of the cameras shone as she stood in the light talking about her mother and father and how there had never been light. The sea godess wore her bright blue skirt it shimmered when she use sign language to tell the class to stand a do there proformance.colours everywhere as the children got into position ,they wore vest’s with different coloured sparkles . the first class danced to the song hot patatoe . I felt that the teachers did a great job making the proformance everyone gave them a round of applause.

In the fresh hot 20th Tuesday morning the juniors performed a show. It was about the Maori gods and
how the earth came to be. The story told us that there was no light an until there was some light the children of Paptuanuku and Rangnui were to remain in the dark. The juniors were reall good at preforming the show they had a really good haka led by Levi and powerful actors they made the story extremely interesting. I think it was an enjoyable show. Of course my favourite part was the haka why because they had a powerful leader and they tried their best. By Joshua.

On Tuesday morning the seniors and middles walked to the kings performing art centre.
We walked there to see the junior’s production.
When we were seated in chairs it went dark and the show was about to begin.
The show was about the gods of are world.
The gods names are Tang- ora the god of the sea.
The second name is Tahiri Matea the god of the wheather.
And the third name is Tane Mahuta god of the forest.
And the fourth is Mother of the earth and theirs one more god but i cant remember what god it is.
the costumes were wonderful.
and the dancing movements were very strong.
They had beautiful dances for each god becuase they had no light. my favourite dance was the god of the sea dance. the junior production was awesome. By Anika

Voyager 1 and 2 – Trip to Space

For 35 years, Voyager 1 and 2 have travelled the Solar System and have tried to find life on other planets. On the side of the spacecraft are 2 golden discs. One shows and plays the sounds of Earth, the other one has a map of where to find where the sounds come from. On The Sounds Of Earth, it has all kinds of music, like African Music, Indian Music, even Pop Music. On the map of Earth, it shows where the music is from.
Both Voyagers have sent some photos down to Earth and the ODT newspaper put them in the newspaper on Monday 29th of October. They sent a photo of Neptune, the 2 gold discs, Saturn and one of Jupiter’s moons, Dione. Report from Sylvie

Once upon a time there wee two young children who lived in a small village by the river. They lived with their parents, mum and dad. One dark night they heard a loud banging noise at their window. It was there small fairy god mother. She said to the children, "You get three wishes." The boy wished for a bigger comfortable bed. The sister said to him, "You silly brother you wasted our first wish." Then she wished for a bigger bed. He said to her, "You wasted our second wish! You stupid sister!"
Then he wished for an enormous bed. She said, "You wasted our third one!" At this their fairy god mother disappeared. They had no choice except to go to bed on on their big bed and sleep.

Monkeys

Rabbits

Snakes

When to use 'a' or 'an'

Generally speaking we use 'a' if the next word has a beginning consonant sound and 'an' if the next word begins with a vowel sound. However there are exceptions and confusions.
E.g. I will buy a house in an hour. both house and hour begin with the letter 'h' but it is silent in hour so you use 'an'
Now try the test. Click onto 'a' and 'an' test below and click on the one you think belongs.

take the 'a' and 'an' test.

The Great Brick Robbery on PhotoPeach

The Great Brick Robbery

Today St Clair school children got the opportuniy to see The Great Brick Robbery. The main charictor in the play was a boy called Winston that was only just starting a new school. The people in the play were fully trained on how to get the voices high and low . Also on how to get changed properly in a certain amount of time. They have done the play 30 something times so far and have another 200 to go around New Zealand. That’s quite a lot of times! They also had a trick on how to get changed it was to wear different clothes underneath. You can see in the play that Winston's mum is also Denice because she is wearing school shorts underneath and you can see this when she twirls around.
There was a Gadget Gang lead by a girl called deniceshe was the bully in the play. She had a cellphone competition with brick the competition was about when the old brick phone had a dance off with Denice's phone but Denice's celephone hasn’t been struck by lightning and can't dance. It was very funny when denices phone sang the wrong song and Winston put it on the internet. Denice was cyber bullying which means it is bulling through a phone, email, social sites, like mean texts and phone calls. Have you seen the great brick robbery?
What would you do to stop cyber bullying like not give out cellphone numbers or email addresses etc.? Its real and it does happen - be aware!

My Paper Garden

In the weekend Nicola made a paper garden. She made it with cardboard, sticky jewels, glue, pen springs and different coloured paper. firstly she started with the cardboard and added the triangle in the middle. After adding the side pieces Nicola added all the decorations. She made them herself with a Cuttle bug cutter. This cutter also indents the paper with patterns which was used on the tree and leaves. It took her most of the weekend to make it.

Can you see the things she made?
A butterfly, frog, tree, buzzy bees, an owl and some flowers? Can you find them all?

Lava Girl saves the Day

One day, Anya Robbins was doing her shopping with her friend, Jessica Mills, when Anya’s ice crystal started glowing, and Jess’s watch started beeping and they ran to an empty isle and listened to what Captain Susan had to say, “Shark Boy has escaped, we need your help!”
So the girls went to their lair on the beach and got their costumes on and were about to refuel their powers and became Ice Girl and Lava Girl, when Shark Boy came rushing round the corner and saw them, so he ran as fast as a bullet, charging at them. Ice Girl froze his body, but she didn’t get to refuel all of her powers, so his head was not covered in ice. ’I’ll get you for this!’ he screamed, and Ice Girl closed the door of the lair, just to hear ice being cracked open.  They opened the door to see Shark Boy disappearing towards the town.
“He needs to fix his mood,” said Lava Girl. “No time for that, we’ve got to get ready!”
So they went in their magic wardrobes and, with a flash of light, they became Ice Girl and her trusty sidekick, Lava Girl!
Just at the very moment, Lava Girl’s watch started beeping, so they listened carefully to what Captain Susan had to say, “Meet me at the top of Hotel Sursilva, now!” So they rushed out to the city and found Shark Boy easily, he was destroying an ice cream cart, when he looked up and saw Ice Girl and Lava Girl.   He ran and bounced up to them snapping his mighty jaws, just to see Ice Girl’s hand sticking out, and he realised that she was about to freeze him. He ducked out of the way, but Ice Girl was too smart to freeze what was in front of her so she lowered her hand and froze his head! He was leaning sideways with his head and fell over and one layer of the ice cracked and broke off, which made it lighter for him to stand up. But it was still a little bit heavy for him so he tried to break it on the ground again, and it worked, so Lava Girl pointed her hand at his bottom when he turned around and burned him, which made him scream. While he was to busy screaming, Ice Girl and Lava Girl went to the top of the Hotel Sursilva, and saw Captain Susan waiting, with her arms crossed.
“I have been waiting for ages! Why did you take so long?”
“We had to fight Shark Boy before we got here, Lava Girl burned his bottom!’ They giggled at the thought of Shark Boy being burned on the bottom, but Captain Susan didn’t seem to be laughing.
“Why aren’t you laughing Susan?” said Ice Girl. “We need to be saving the world, not laughing at Shark Boy.” So they made a plan of how they were going to defeat Shark Boy. When they were finished making their plan, Captain Susan said,’ Alright, you are ready to fight!’ So they went to find Shark Boy. It was easy to find him again, he was playing with a car, throwing itand smashing it.  It looked horrible. The towns folks looked horrified, so Ice Girl told the people to go into hiding, while Lava Girl was getting Shark Boys attention.
“Lava Girl, how nice to see you again,” smirked Shark Boy. “I, for once, am going to destroy you and Ice Girl! I’m sick and tired of your meddling and making me frozen cold or searing hot!”
Lava Girl didn’t look as shocked as the towns folk, “How? We beat you last time, and got you to jail, you want to go back there?”
Shark Boy laughed, “I’m more powerful than ever, how do you think you can beat me? I’ve been to see Mr Electric, and he said he would fuel up my strength, so I’m more powerful than last time!”  . Lava Girl and Ice Girl looked very shocked at the word Mr Electric. Mr Electric was Shark Boy’s boss, he tried to beat Ice Girl a few years ago but she got him with the last of her strength. To get even he created Shark Boy to defeat her, but Ice Girl heard because her ice crystal started glowing with the sound of Mr Electric creating Shark Boy, so she created a side kick, Lava Girl, to help her.
Ice Girl told Lava Girl not to be scared because they weren’t fighting Mr Electric, they were fighting Shark Boy. Mr Electric would have to wait for another day.
Lava Girl felt much braver now, and said ‘Let’s go kick some butt!’ So Ice Girl distracted Shark Boy while Lava Girl kicked him with her burning hot foot! Shark Boy fell backwards, and just as he touched the ground, Ice Girl made lot’s of layers of ice over the top of him and called the police. The police came and Lava Girl heated him up as they caught him. ‘Nice work girls, you always defeat Shark Boy, next it’s Mr Electric.’ The police shivered at the thought, they were scared of Mr Electric, so were the towns folk.
‘We’ll put Shark Boy in something more safer than a bars, thank you.’ They dragged Shark Boy into the truck and drove him away.
“Well, that’s over and done with, let’s go.’ So they ran back to their lair and changed back into their normal clothes, and remembered about their shopping, so went to the supermarket.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Super Hero Series - Rayman

The Superhero Ray Man Hi my name is James Robin. By day I help people who are blind by walking bedside them holding onto their arm. Every afternoon I become a super hero.
One Saturday afternoon I was at home relaxing in my armchair. I was reading the newspaper and it said Bad Mr Fox has escaped from jail. He was in jail for robbing a bank of a thousand dollars.
Focusing my super hearing on Mr Fox’s voice, I discovered he was at a bank! He was saying in his evil voice “I’ve got money I’ve got money.” Then I heard the sound of money falling. Aha! There must be a hole in his bag, thought Ray Man.
‘What the…!!” yelled Mr Fox. Running to my bedroom wardrobe I quickly spun around and changed into my Ray Man costume. Running off my house roof I quickly flew through the air to the BNZ bank, with my super strength I punched a hole through the roof and jumped. I landed right behind Mr Fox and punched him in the back. Mr Fox hit the ground like a pancake.
"I feel dead,” cried Mr Fox. I picked Mr Fox up and dropped him into a sack, flying back out my hole that I had made I flew to the nearest police station. Seeing two policemen there I dropped him to the ground in front of them.
“Thankyou Rayman!” called the policemen.
Flying home I put on my pyjamas and went to bed. Mum never saw a thing.   Written by  Connor

Super Hero Stories - Dragon Fly Girl

Once upon a time the Mayoress was at home reading the newspaper when she read the headline. The magic crystal had bean stolen by the Evil Wizard. The Mayoress knew that she the Dragon Fly girl had to get back the crystal. Going to her secret lair under the pond she changed into the best super hero the town had seen. Just a few minutes later after she left she saw a thistle. She was horrified – this was the only thing that could take her powers away – just when she needs them all. Avoiding the thistle and feeling a little weak she went to the Evil Wizards old lair. Good no thistle here and I am feeling stronger. I will need all my strength to beat Wizard and get the Crystal back. Flying into Evil Wizards lair she caught him sleeping. How lucky she thought. Going quietly she picked up the Crystal and tied up the Wizard before he could wake and set a spell on her. Taking Evil Wizard to Prison she left the Crystal on the policeman’s desk where it would be returned to its owner. All her work done she returned to the pond the emerged as the Mayoress to continue her day job. Written by Nicola

Have you ever had to wake up at 7.30sm in the weekend? Because I have so I could compete in the Weetbix Triathlon. I got up and dressed feeling very special wearing my tri-athlon T-shirt. Did my hair and grabbed my helmet and bike. Mum put it on the car and I ate breakfast and got my bag with food and drink. We were ready but had to wait for dad! My t-shirt made me start feeling nervous. It really lovely with blue and white writing. It has the sponsers names written on it like ASB and Toyota. I was in a team with Eliza and Kaiya. We biked, swam and ran. I did the biking section for 400metres until transition where I had to tag our runner Kaiya. I don't really know what place we got but it was the best. Anika On Sunday I went to Mosgiel. You may be asking why? Because I entered the Weetbix Triathlon! We had to bike, swim and run. As we waited after registeration, (we did alot of waiting) for the announcer to call yellowcaps, we watched the other kids run out from the pool. When we were called, we ran to the pool, because we were excited about starting and lined up with the other 8 yearolds. Then we did some more waiting (told you so) to get into the pool! finally we got to get up and go to do some more waiting!! Finally we were in the pool! When the coach yelled go we sped off into the deep end. When I tried to stand up and take a breath I couldn't touch the ground. we had to swim a 100 metres three times. Finally I had finished and people were helping us out. I took my cap and goggles off and started running to the bike.I got changed without gettting dried! When I was dressed I ran my bkie to the starting line. Little did I know that the bike path was really long. I biked around and around until I finally got out of the big field. I was thinking about how I was to run this field soon. Parking my bike as quickly as I could i jogged to the run start. I was really tired. Finally I reached the finish line and the 'help team' gave me a gold medal and some water. I held up the medal as they took a picture of me. I looked for mum and went to her to sit down and have a rest and listen to who got prizes, but it wasn't me. Finally it was time to pack up my gear and go home. Sylvie

Birds Nest

Today Nicola shared her find of a small birds nest that was found in a tree on her property.
We noticed that the bird had woven its nest around twigs so that it could not fall out of the tree.  It was made out of moss, grasses and some white fluff that the bird had collected.

We carefully cut it open and revealed a dead silkworm.  The silk threads were very fine but tough to cut through.
